Shipwrecks are a funny thing, lure you in for a look even when you think they’re not going to be much chop. Starring at the multibeam scan we thought piece of wharf, barge, pontoon, even a cataraman yacht. With some ominous weather looming, we jumped in for a ‘quick look’, and found what we had expected – a scuttled barge/pontoon in around 57m of water.
New wrecks are not always steeped in history, some reflect the working nature of Sydney Harbour. Some aren’t even all that interesting, putting them into the ‘training dive’ category. Initial research suggests it was likely a 30 ton concrete pontoon scuttled in 1991, dimensions 13.1m x 3.5m x 1.7m.
The wreck location (33 48.889’S 151 20.593’E) was identified by Scott Willan, making it wreck number 21 for him. Thanks to Victoria Parr for skippering in some awful conditions when the southerly blew up!
